McCall's 8217 & 8221. Cute Summer Set!

Hello everyone!!! I recently returned from vacation and while on vacation we traveled to San Diego, California and we visited the San Diego Zoo! And YES...... I wanted to make an outfit for the zoo!! LOL I wanted to make something that was going to be breathable because of the hot temperatures, and I also wanted to make something that was going to be exotic! I had this beautiful Ankara fabric in my stash that I thought was the perfect match for the zoo theme so I used the fabric to complete my set!!!! I used McCall's 8217 to make the top and McCall's 8821 to make my ruffled shorts (pictures of the patterns are below)!!! Below you will find pictures of of my outfit and at the very bottom you will find the pattern reviews for both!! You can also watch the video of the review with all types of video clips with me modeling my outfit by clicking here!

Pattern Reviews!

Pattern Name: So for the first pattern that I used to make this set is McCall’s 8217, which is the top.

Pattern Type: McCall’s, commercial

Pattern Cost: $1.99 on sale

Pattern Description: Misses elasticized tops in three lengths

Skill Level: Easy

Recommended Fabric: Charmeuse, cotton blends, gingham and gauze

Pattern Sizing: XS - XXL

Size that I Cut: L

The size that I cut is a size large, however, I took a guess because there are not any finished measurements and because the shirt is designed to be gathered with the elastic casings, you cannot measure the fabric to get an actual finished measurement.

I normally wear a large or extra large so I decided to go with the large because I didn’t want to drown in an extra large if it was too much fabric.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love how it has the elastic casing to bring shape to the garment but it is not actually form fitting and I like the strap options.

Fabric Purchased: My stash from 2018

Pattern Alterations or any design changes you made? I adjusted the straps by taking and additional two inches off.

Pattern Alterations that are suggested: Adjusting the straps if needed

Would I sew it again? Yes, yes and yes!!!

Did you do anything different/special to make this project? No

Would you recommend it to others? Yes!

For the next pattern that I made to make this set,

Pattern Name: I used McCall’s 8221, which are my shorts and this is also a new McCall’s Pattern!

Skill Level: Very Easy, level one learn to sew

Recommended Fabric: Poplin, crepes, cotton blends, chambray

Pattern Sizing: XS - XXL

Size that I Cut: Medium, and this is a pattern where you would more than likely fall into a smaller pattern size than normal so you want to pay attention to that if you decide to purchase it.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope? Yes

Were the instructions easy to follow? Yes

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern? I love how it has the elastic casing at the waist, I like the ruffle finish for the hem and I love the pockets!
