The Little Red Dress Project 2017

Hello everyone and happy holidays to you all! Last year I was amazed at all of the beautiful dresses that were made for the Little Red Dress Project on Instagram but I was not able to participate because I had just heard of the challenge and didn’t have time to put a dress together. Although I wanted to participate this year (and I did), I almost backed out of it because I didn’t want to adjust measurements to accommodate my baby bump….. In other words, I was being lazy in thoughts.

One night, I couldn’t fall asleep so I decided to google red dresses and I came across this one below! I instantly thought that I had to make that dress because it fits the cause of the challenge and my current situation…. PREGNANT!!

To participate in the Little Red Dress Project you have to follow the rules of two options Challenge Rules:

  1. Make a Red Christmas dress for you, a friend or child. Your dress should be 90% red.

  2. Style Icon Challenge: Re-create a famous red dress or your favorite from the Movies. (No color exceptions, your dress must be 90% red, accent colors are allowed but should not distract from the overall dress. Obviously, I picked option two and re-created a dress that Beyoncé wore to the 2017 Grammy Awards.

This dress was not hard to re-create. I used two McCall Pattern Company patterns to make it. For skirt I used McCall’s 7047 and for the bodice/top and band I used Vogue 1471.

The dress is completely lined and the only adjustment that I made was opening the bodice a little more to show the same or similar amount of skin that Beyoncé showed while wearing her dress. [endif]

This was my first time working with sequin. I have heard many stories about how difficult it is to work with fabric full of sequin and how people have had issues with it messing up their scissors and breaking needles. Because I have heard so many challenging issues, I googled “How to Sew with Sequin” and watched a few tutorials on Youtube. The most informative and helpful tutorial was one with MimiG on How to make a Sequin Maxi Skirt (you can find the tutorial here). This was very helpful and I followed all her instructions on what to use and I had no problems or hiccups making this dress.

So…. How do you think I did?!? Leave a comment below and let me know. Also, please see below for another pic and a pattern review.
